The kingdom of Cambodia is awakening from the long sleep of the Khmer Rouge / Pol Pot era. This beautiful country is located almost in the center of the south est asian block and has a lot to offer to tourists and travelers coming here from everywhere. Cambodia can be visited during the whole year, but if you can choose, come in december or january, you will enjoy a lower level of humidity.
Cambodia is a cheap country: come here with just the strict necessary, because you can find and buy everything at the local shops and markets, at a fraction of the price. Some examples: a typical Angkor t-shirt can cost 2 or 3 USD, as well as a towel. A little statue, in metal or rock, finely hand decorated or carved can cost 8 - 15 USD. The Lonely Planet guide can cost around 7-8 dollars. Soaps and other products for the body care are also available for really cheap.
The 2 ways to enter in Cambodia are either by bus (for example from Bangkok) or by airplane. Cambodia has 2 international airports, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. These 2 cities are interconnected with several domestic flight every day. You can also travel by train, in this case be prepared to travel at the incredible speed of 20 km (or, if you prefer 12 miles) per hour.
The quality of the telephone service is acceptable, but not comparable to western standards. Internet cafè are sprouting everywhere like mushrooms, claiming to offer ADSL and other extra fast services. Their internet is good enough to check your emails, and to view websites not too overloaded or complicated. Don't even try with multimedia content. Naturally,every day goes a little better, so maybe in the future these limitations will disappear.
Criminality: Cambodians are generally nice and honest people, but of course, you can find someone with bad intentions too. Don't walk or ride the bike alone in the night, try to stay where other people are. If something happen, just raise your hands, and let them do the job without resistance. But, as told before,is statistically rare that such events happen.
So take care, but in most occasion it will simply go fine.
