On a Cold and Gloomy Night

On a Cold and Gloomy Night

On Monday October 19, 1992, it was the third day of Pchum Ben. It was a cold and gloomy night. The wind was howling and thunder could be heard often. It had been like this for several hours, yet there was no rain. Boys, who lived near Damnak pagoda at Siem Reap province, normally get up around three o’clock to find coconuts at the pagoda. Every night five or six young boys including me went there. Luckily, it was the third day of Pchum Ben, so only I and another friend went into the pagoda.
Many coconut palms were planted behind the temple and others were planted in the area where many tombs were located. That night we left home early and we got only one each.
Suddenly, we heard a clear voice came from the area where many corpses were buried. There were two coconuts. We wondered why there were coconuts even though most of the coconut palms were planted only two years.
Everyone was reluctant, but we still decided to go there. We have found two more coconuts each, so each of us got three coconuts. We decided to leave and came back home. Suddenly, we saw two more coconuts. Because of our greed for them, we didn’t came back home yet. From a tomb near us, a low husky voice threatened us that we had to leave there. We immediately asked, “Who are you?” but there weren’t answers. We did not care where it came from and who he was. Unfortunately we could not find those coconuts too. My friend said, “I’m sure that I really saw two coconuts.” While we were talking the same husky voice threatened us again. Before I could not count to two, a tall man appeared on a tomb. At that time we were very frightened and we ran as quickly as possible. We arrived home at 4:30 am.
Being very frightened, my friend was sent to hospital at 7:00 am. He had a high fever. This baffling mystery remains unsolved. Who threatened us? No one could answer this question. It was probably a ghost, who had been released during Pchum Ben.
